    A Dedication

    "Carry your ideals before you like banners;

    it is not enough to put them on pedestals.
    Ideals which grip the masses
    prove to be a mighty force.

    Their force is stronger than the hope of earthly gain and
    they are more productive of real wealth.

    Nationalized ownership that throttles all creative effort,
    will no more be the test of revolution.
    Participation in decision-making
    will stimulate workers to greater efforts
    and
    common ownership will be the aim."

    - Baba Amte

    While paying tribute to one who is definitely one of our heroes, we look at the issues of activism today - who, and what type of people are todays heroes.. many of whom we don't even know. We also look at some news stories, where these heroes have been sidelined, some even branded as terrorist, by an establishment which has become increasingly intolerant, and impatient to anyone who opposes its destructive policies.

    In Focus

    Our Focus this month is the NREGA. On the one hand the Finance Minister announced the extention of the scheme to all rural districts, on the other hand came the CAG report which generated much comment in the media. Opponents highlighted the corruption angle, calling it a waste, preferring the money to be spend on "more productive" infrastructure, while supporters led by Aruna Roy and Jean Dreze, felt the report actually called for more effective instruments to decentralise the programme and make it more transparent.

    Concern

    Of concern this month has been the events in Mumbai. What happened?

    Nothing really. Raj said something. Samajwadi party responded. A few cabbies were beaten up by MNS workers, many of whom now run small businesses under patronage. And the whole vitriol is justified in terms of the "other" mainly taxi drivers, dudhwalas spoiling Marathi culture. What is of concern is that there are vote bank and economic underpinnings, and Mumbai-ites already seem to have forgotten how easily they can be played around with.
