Trading
water is not a solution
There
is
a whirlwind of protests
whipping up against privatisation of water distribution, already in
vogue in several cities of Karnataka. The proposed setting up of a
regulatory council for water is seen as a prelude to further
privatisation and to the likely introduction of pre-paid water cards.

"Curb
discharge of sewage into open spaces"
Environment
and citizens' groups across the southern suburbs of Chennai have
appealed to the State government to take to task sewage tanker
operators, who discharged raw, untreated sewage into open places,
vacant housing plots and in waterbodies.
Members
and office-bearers of the group pointed to the vast open tracts of
housing plots that have come under layers of sewage let out by the
tankers. Volunteers from Evergreen Exnora conducted a round-the-clock
survey recently and noticed 40 lorry loads of sewage being let out
into plots in Tellus Avenue.
As
each lorry had a capacity of 12,000 litres, several lakh litres of
sewage was being let out into the open and also near the sprawling
Vengaivaasal Lake. The movement of the sewage tankers had also
severely damaged the metal roads in their localities. When a couple
of residents confronted the tanker operators, they were threatened by
hostile crew.
