Could sea power solve the energy crisis

As Gordon Brown steers Britain towards a nuclear future, Dominic Michaelis, Alex Michaelis and Trevor Cooper-Chadwick suggest we turn to the oceans instead.
The French inventor Georges Claude is largely forgotten today; if he is remembered at all, it is as the creator of the neon lamp. Yet one of his projects from the 1920s could resolve the global energy crisis - by harnessing the power of the oceans.
It may sound like science fiction, but Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is an idea whose time has come. It is based on the work of Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval, a 19th-century French physicist who thought of using the sea as a giant solar-energy collector.

    New vistas in construction

Has bamboo's time arrived? The high cost of inputs going into conventional construction is beginning to push more people in the direction of alternatives, and this was topic of a recent seminar at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

    Roger Anger passes away

Roger Anger, chief architect of the international township of Auroville and member of the Governing Board of the Auroville Foundation, passed away on January 15 in France. He was 84 and is survived by his wife, daughter and grandchildren. Mr. Anger had been ailing for some time. As the person who gave form to the Mother's vision, Mr. Anger conceptualised the master plan of Auroville. Giving up commercial architecture, he dissolved his partnership in France to take up the Auroville project as a full-time work. A sculptor, artist, architect and planner, he designed the Matrimandir, the soul of Auroville. He was here in October last and was scheduled to come again towards the end of this month.

Lights out' compaign to throw light on global warming

London, Paris and Mumbai have all done it. Sydney got more than half its population to take part. And now it's Chenna's turn to plan a one-hour, citywide, "lights out" campaign to promote awareness about global warming. Exnora International is co-ordinating the effort for a symbolic switching off of Greater Chennai' s lights, fans, air-conditioners and electrical appliances between 7 and 8 p.m. on May 1.

    Efforts to harvest ocean's engergy

Chris Martinson and his fellow fishermen catch crab and shrimp in the same big wave that one day could generate an important part of the Northwest's energy supply. Wave farms, harvested with high-tech buoys that are being tested here on the Oregon coast, would strain clean, renewable power from the surging sea.
