Slum
dwellers fined for PIL
How
can a slum dweller earning just Rs l0,000 a month pay a fee of
Rs33,000 to obtain information under the Right To Information (RTI)
Act? That's the question judges of the Bombay High Court posed before
slapping costs of Rs40,000 on the four petitioners for "abusing
the process of law" in filing a PIL challenging the
redevelopment of a 30-acre plot behind World Trade Centre at Cuffe
Parade.

Mayor
promises to save Pali village
.
Following
numerous complaints from residents of Pali gaothan in Bandra about
illegal high-rise buildings coming up in the area, mayor Shubha Raul
visited the tiny village on Monday. Shocked with what she saw there,
the mayor has promised an inquiry into the matter and asked local
ward officer, G P Rathod, to give an explanation. Illegal
constructions started in the area about six years ago when some
cottages in the 300-year-old Pali village—with its narrow lanes and
small bungalows— were demolished to give way to 10-odd highrises,
which residents allege are illegal and unnecessary.
