    Urban housing policy ready

The government will soon place the National Urban Housing and Habitat Policy in Parliament for early implementation, Information and Broadcasting Minister P.R. Dasmunsi said here on Friday(30/11/2007). The policy was cleared by the Union Cabinet at its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Thursday(29/11/2007) night, he said. To be circulated among state governments and other stake holders, the policy is aimed at promoting sustained development of urban housing and settlements with focus on social housing for economically weaker sections and lower income groups, he said.

Government launches housing scheme for coastal residents

The Tamil Nadu Government has launched a massive housing scheme for those whose houses are located within 1000 metres of the high-tide line in coastal areas and 200 metres on either side of the backwaters.
Disclosing this at a function, Chief Secretary L.K.Tripathy said 53,000 houses were to be constructed under the scheme, which was being executed with the assistance of the Government of India and the World Bank.
Work on 22,000 houses had started in all districts, except Chennai and Tiruvarur. The Centre had released Rs.165 crore. The houses, each costing Rs. 2.54 lakh, would be ready in another 10-12 months.
For the remaining 31,000 houses, the State had approached the World Bank, which agreed in principle to offer finance. Non-concrete houses will be reconstructed.

    The gulf within

Real estate in Delhi, as indeed in all major cities of India, is a booming business. Priceless land is being given to builders for heavy duty shopping malls, cinema theatres and restaurants, as the capital of India takes the lead in catering to the rich and the richer. The government has become a bystander, as the focus shifts from the poor who find themselves placed completely on the margins of development with no solace in sight. Instead of stepping in to build housing for the needy, hospitals and schools, the government has allowed the big builders to capture all the available land for a small percentage of consumers in the city. It is amazing how the poor have vanished from policy planning, with just a few beggars at the traffic lights left to remind the cars whizzing by that there is more to development than meets the eye, and that the poor still find themselves without the basic benefits that should have reached every stratum of society in these 60 odd years of freedom.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Corporation (MMRDA), known for its various transport-related projects, is now planning to make a stride in the field of housing. "The proposal for rental housing on the basis of the Shanghai model is under consideration, as it will help to provide affordable housing for the urban poor," said Mr Ratnakar Gaikwad, metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA.

    MMRDA plans low-rent housing

Low-rental housing units with a carpet area of 160 sq ft and rentals ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 per month will be available for those who need them, if the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has its way. A special authority will be also constituted to prepare a master plan for three new growth centres.
