    Urban earthquake vulnerability project in 38 cities

    Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal told the Lok Sabha Tuesday that the government would be soon implementing an Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project in 38 cities falling in Seismic Zones III to V and having a population of 500,000 or more.The project aims at reducing the vulnerability of these cities to earthquakes by preparation of response plans at various levels and training of architects and engineers in seismic safe construction practices, he said.

    MCGM introduces self cleaning system to prevent floods

    If there's one thing that Mumbai dreads, it's the floods. And it's not just Mother Nature who is to blame. Solid materials like plastic bags, tires and wood that were choking drains all over the city led to serious flooding problems during the monsoons.Keeping that in mind, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) decided to tackle this problem by introducing a new system called the Self Cleaning System (SCS), which will tackle the problem of sub- stantial solids deposited in the drains.

    National-wide review of disaster management plans begins

    The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), an apex body headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has embarked upon a countrywide review of the preparedness of the official machinery and the local people to cope with natural and manmade disasters, according to Brigadier (Retd) B.K. Khanna, Senior Specialist of the NDMA.

    Apex body pat for Cuddalore model of last mile connectivity

    The Cuddalore model of last mile connectivity will be adopted as the base model of communication aspect of the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation (NCRM) programme conceived by the National Disaster Management Authority, according to Shashidhar Reddy, member, NDMA. While commending the Tamil Nadu government for the post-tsunami rescue and rehabilitation measures along the coastal areas, Mr. Reddy said the communication facility set up using VHF technology in Cuddalore district to pass on information about impending danger from the district headquarters to the last hamlet located on the coastline has inspired the NDMA. Talking to reporters at Mamallapuram, Mr. Reddy said that it was decided to adopt this technique as the base model in the World Bank-assisted $300 million NCRM programme, to be launched by the Union government in nine coastal States and four Union Territories.

    The State government had also submitted a proposal of Rs. 609.40 crore to the Central government for strengthening of saline embankments, establishment of cyclone shelters, plantation along the coastline and creation of mangrove forests.

    Villages to get climate managers

    The battle against climate change is all set to go down to every village in the country. In a bid to create awareness about global warming, the government has decided to train and appoint "climate managers" in villages whose main task will be to create awareness and take steps for sustainable development at the grassroots level. Besides, they will be trained to handle natural disasters and prepare their areas to face such crises. Three agencies have been tasked with implementing the project--the ministries of panchayati raj and science and technology and the chair for sustainable development at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou).
