VISIT
THE VALLEY ON MAY 15TH, 16TH TO WITNESS THE ILLEGALITY AND INJUSTICE
Dear Friends,
All of
you have been supporting and participating in the Narmada struggle. The struggle that
has been on in the oldest of the world's civilizations,
for the
last 21 years, is passing through a critical phase with the challenge of the
122 metres high Sardar Sarovar Dam leading to drowning of
the
communities in the coming monsoon. On the banks of the river are residing 40
thousand families (about 2 lakh people) of Madhya Pradesh and 2000 families of
Maharashtra, at least 30,000 of whom facing threat of submergence this
year, depending on the rainfall.
Our
governments have no land to allot as per the law and thus the Madhya Pradesh government
is trying to force the affectees to accept cash compensation and
shift to the non-habitable sites with no adequate house plots and no
adjacent agricultural land; but the adivasis who have refused to touch cash and
others who too have not received all the entitlements, continue to reside
in their villages - Jalsindhi, Bhavaria, Khaparkheda, Kharya Bhadal.. and
towns, be it Dharampuri, Khalghat, Nisarpur., where these families have
houses, farm lands, fruit gardens, schools, religious places, markets and
what not. In Maharashtra also, there are at least 1000 families that are
to be drowned and 1000 such families whose villages will be marooned.
In such
a situation your support and presence is highly called for, in order to take the
struggle ahead. We invite you for a visit to the valley on May 15th 16th to
witness the ground level situation and have a dialogue with the people. The
team will leave Mumbai on 14th late evening and be back on 17th early morning.
The
tour will include visit to the thickly populated areas in Nimad plains of Madhya Pradesh
and accessible adivasi communities in M.P. and
Maharashtra,
involving no walk on foot and mostly travel by road with a short voyage by
boat. Please confirm your participation at the earliest so as to help us plan
the trip. Your voluntary contribution towards the cost will be welcome.
