Development Alternatives (DA) is one of the world's first social enterprises. DA has been working on the issue of sustainable development for the past 25 years. It has during this time accumulated a vast and in-depth experience and expertise in the field of livelihood and its related themes and issues ranging from technology to environment to social action. The organisation has been sharing its learning and experiences in various platforms. Capacity building is one of the areas in which DA has a stronghold due to its hands on learning at different levels ranging from its on ground direct field work in Bundelkhand and through partners in other states of India and to its influence at the policy level - at the national and international circles.

Trainings Systems Group a programmatic theme within DA is dedicated to see that capacity building is a process for dissemination of the knowledge and experience it has gained and also as a space to hear and learn from the experience of other players in the sector.

Introduction

Participatory Livelihood Assessment Technique (PLAT) is an effective method for ensuring participation of different levels of stakeholders in any project related to livelihood promotion. It has been evolved by Development Alternatives over time and yields positive results if implemented in a methodical and strategic manner with the underlying element of flexibility. It aims at fathoming the critical gaps in livelihood promotion and weighs them against feasibilities to reach a logical conclusion whereby after analysis, a sound action plan or strategy for development can be drawn.

Micro Enterprise Development (28th, 29th & 30th September 2007)

Introduction

Micro-Enterprises play a critical role in the economic development of any economy, but particularly so in those economies which are undergoing a transition from the traditional subsistence to a modern industrial economy. In India, the micro and small industries sector has a long historical tradition and since independence has contributed significantly to the overall economic development of the country.

Given its employment pattern, growth, geographical dispersion and contribution to total industrial output, the micro enterprise sector will continue to play a significant role in eradicating poverty and promoting higher levels of gainful employment. Development organizations have begun playing a very crucial role in promoting micro-enterprises. Hence skills pertaining to development of micro-enterprises must be acquired by them.
